If you’re heading to Randy Now’s Man Cave to see the Pylon Reenactment Society (PRS), you’re in for a masterclass in art-punk history.
The band isn't just a tribute; it’s a living continuation of the legendary Athens, GA band Pylon, fronted by original vocalist Vanessa Briscoe Hay. Pylon was famously R.E.M.’s favorite band and a pillar of the 1980s New Wave scene, known for their jagged, danceable rhythms and Vanessa’s inimitable vocal textures.
What to Expect:
- The Sound: PRS captures the "scintillating noise-pop" and "punk-funk" of the original Pylon while adding fresh energy. They perform classic Pylon tracks (like "Gyrate" and "Stop It") alongside original material from their critically acclaimed debut album, Magnet Factory (2024).
- The Vibe: Expect angular guitars, propulsive bass lines, and "dance music for people who don’t dance well." It’s edgy, intellectual, and incredibly fun.
- The Lineup: Vanessa Briscoe Hay is joined by veteran Athens musicians Jason NeSmith, Kay Stanton, and Gregory Sanders, who treat the legacy with both reverence and a modern "reenactment" spirit.
The Venue: Randy Now's Man Cave
This isn't your typical rock club. Owned by legendary promoter Randy "Now" Ellis (the man behind the iconic City Gardens in Trenton), the Man Cave is an intimate, 49-seat record store and "pop-culture boutique" located in Hightstown, NJ (having moved from its original Bordentown location).
- Atmosphere: You’ll be sitting on folding chairs surrounded by vintage vinyl, retro toys, and rare sodas. There is no stage—you are literally feet away from the band.
- Why It’s Special: Randy is a local treasure who has booked everyone from The Ramones to Green Day. Seeing a band here feels like being at a private house party with a piece of music history.
Pro Tip: Since the venue is tiny and seats are limited to under 50 people, these shows almost always sell out. If you're a fan of post-punk, jangle pop, or just the history of the Athens scene, this is an unmissable, "bucket-list" level intimate concert experience.
