"The Sound of Music" opened on Broadway at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre on November 16, 1959, and ran for 1,443 performances. The production shared the Tony Award for Best Musical with Fiorello!. It also won for Best Actress in a Musical (Mary Martin), Best Featured Actress in a Musical (Patricia Neway), Best Scenic Design of a Musical (Oliver Smith), and Best Musical Direction. And it was nominated for Best Featured Actor in a Musical (both Theodore Bikel and Kurt Kasznar) and Best Director of a Musical (Vincent J. Donehue). The entire children's cast was nominated for Best Featured Actress category as a single nominee, even though two children were boys. The original Broadway cast album has since sold three million copies. The Columbia Masterworks LP was released in 1959 (Mono edition KOL 5450). 1st release is in a Gatefold sleeve with drawing of a guitar on the front, a photo of Mary Martin and the children on the back and extensive notes and photos of the production inside. This was Columbia's first cast album issued in a Gatefold cover and carrying the KOL/KOS prefix. In the mid 1960s Columbia pressed additional LPs using a standard sleeve with the photo of Mary and the kids on the front and re-printing the synopsis on the back. The catalog number remained the same. No track durations on the jacket or the labels. Track durations have been added as derived from timing the vinyl.
